– Dry Eye Therapy –
Living with dry eye is misery. Dry eye is a chronic (long-term) condition for those who suffer under its hold. The term dry eye covers so many symptoms: eye stinging, burning, watering, grittiness, scratchiness, redness, lid swelling, lid redness and the constant feeling of a something in the eye are just some of the symptoms that patients describe. No wonder it’s linked with depression with those who suffer from the disease, who often are at their wit’s end with discomfort.
What also makes dry eyes incredibly frustrating for those who suffer with it is they’ve tried treatment but it hasn’t worked.
Usually, when dry eyes are mentioned, the typical treatment recommended by a health care professional is eye drops. However, most sufferers who use eye drops with this chronic condition get relief for only a small amount of time (usually about 10-15 minutes) until the symptoms return.
Who wants to be instilling drops in their eyes every 15 minutes?!
What causes dry eye?
Dry eye can have many causes and to get long term and effective relief from symptoms, it is best to determine the cause of the dry eye before recommending an appropriate treatment.
Each layer of the tear film is important and a deficiency in any layer will result in an unstable tear film and subsequent dry eye. This instability then leads to great tear film evaporation or an uneven coating of the ocular surface with tears, and because the eye’s surface is no longer wetted appropriately, the tissue becomes inflamed. This chronic inflammation then cannot be just lubricated again to go away, it needs more help.
Working out where the deficiencies are in your tear film leads to more effective and highly-personalised treatment of your dry eye.
