– Orthokeratology Gold Coast –
Imagine you could correct your vision whilst you slept … sounds like wishful thinking, right? With orthokeratology contact lenses (OrthoK), it isn’t just fantasy, it’s reality!
What are Orthokeratology (OrthoK) Lenses?
Orthokeratology contact lenses are rigid contact lenses (RGPs) that you wear whilst sleeping. These lenses trap a reservoir of tears underneath them that gently moulds the cornea (clear dome of tissue that covers the coloured part, or iris, of the eye) into a new shape. Once the lenses have been worn overnight and are removed the next morning, the new corneal shape provides clear vision throughout the day. As this new ideal corneal shape does wear off over time, lenses should be reinserted every night to remould the cornea to its optimum shape and maintain clear vision.
Who is suitable for Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology was initially developed to correct short-sighted prescriptions. However, with the rapid advances in technology in this area, we can now correct long-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (ie: needing reading glasses after the age of 40). These days, there is every chance that we can provide you with clear vision throughout the day without the need for glasses in any way!
Orthokeratology and Myopia Control
In addition to the freedom that these orthokeratology contact lenses can provide, they have been proven with several longitudinal studies to slow down the progression of short-sightedness in children.
Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is increasing around the world. By the year 2050, it has been predicted that half of the world’s population will be short-sighted! Because of these sobering numbers, lots of research has been conducted worldwide, looking for ways to prevent short-sightedness or slow its progression once it has developed.
Typically, once a child has become short-sighted, the condition tends to get worse (ie: glasses get stronger). We also know that higher degrees of short-sightedness are linked to higher rates of eye diseases, like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal detachments. Because of this relationship, it is important to limit the progression of short-sightedness once it has begun.
Orthokeratology is one of the proven ways to slow down myopia progression. Not often in life does a treatment come along that is not only preventative, it provides freedom and lifestyle benefits too. No wonder so many of our patients love to wear orthokeratology lenses!
