Eye Conditions Requiring Advanced Contact Lens Fitting

Advanced contact lens fitting often requires corneal mapping with a corneal topgrapher

Unfortunately, there are several conditions that affect the shape of the clear tissue on the front of the eye (the cornea). This causes significant vision blur that cannot easily or fully be corrected by wearing glasses.

The most common cause of this type of vision blur is an eye disease called keratoconus. Other less common eye conditions that cause similar visual distortion are corneal grafts and pellucid marginal degeneration.

All of these eye conditions are very frustrating and can be quite isolating, as it’s hard for others to understand why good quality vision cannot be achieved with glasses.

Rigid Contact Lenses

However, good quality vision is able to be achieved again with the use of rigid contact lenses! They neutralise the distorted corneal shape with the tear film caught underneath the lens and vision is restored due to the optically perfect rigid surface on the front of the lens. We have many rigid (or RGP – rigid gas permeable) lens options available for vision rehabilitation: small diameter, large diameter, mini-scleral, scleral and hybrid options all available.

Custom Advanced Contact Lens Fitting at Eyeconic Optometry

But where to start? To start with, it’s a classic case of irony – your cornea is the most sensitive organ of your whole body and here we want you to wear a piece of firm plastic on its surface to regain clear vision! So not everyone is going to be able to happily tolerate all options. However, having many options gives you choice about how you can correct your vision and our job is to guide you through the choices.

Each lens design has its own list of pros & cons, and with the trial lenses kept in practice, we are usually able to try several options before ordering your custom lens. These lenses are usually under warranty for 3-6 months and final adjustments of lens shape and power are made during this time to achieve a perfect fit, good comfort and, most importantly, great vision.
